QDN local leader and Board Member Philia Polites, together with QDN CEO Paige Armstrong, recently hosted a community conversation at Kallangur discuss setting up a local Peer Support network in this area.
Over 20 energized people attended the discussions held at Frederick Marsden Youth Centre who were all keen to see the group get up and running.
Philia was nominated as the Group Convener for the Kallangur Local Support Group.
Philia said, “A local support group in Kallangur is just another exciting way to bring people with disability together to fill in the tapestry of support for people with disability in the area. I would expect us to have lively meetings where people can have their voice heard and ensure that there is “nothing about us, without us”.
The purpose of the Kallangur group is to provide up to date information about State and Federal initiatives; including the National Disability Insurance Scheme, as well as providing people with disability the opportunity to discuss issues that affect them.
There are now Peer Support Networks operating in North Lakes, Deception Bay, Caboolture and Kallangur.
The group has been offered support from Marsden Families who will provide assistance with logistics, catering and will provide meeting rooms for the group.
The first meeting of the Kallangur Local Support Group will be in August and it looks like this will be another great group with lots of energized members ready to jump in to make this group a success.
