In their final meeting for 2017, the Self Managers Peer Support Group hosted a workshop for Decision Makers.
The workshop was facilitated by Michelle Browning who is a passionate advocate for people with disability to be supported to make far more of their own decisions.
In 2010, Michelle was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to explore supported decision-making in England and Canada. Since then she has worked in implementing trials of supported decision-making practice in NSW and Victoria in collaboration with Guardianship offices, government and the NDIS.
Michelle encouraged Decision Makers to bring along their Decision Supporters as they reflected on their experience of decision making, and hear about five factors that make decision making difficult.
The aim of the session was for participants to develop confidence in their role as decision makers, a role that is significantly shaped by their ability to express their will and preferences. Participants said they found it informative.
